3-month-old baby seriously injured in accident, police say

SAN ANTONIO – A 3-month-old baby was seriously injured in a crash on the West Side, according to San Antonio police.

The crash occurred shortly after midnight Saturday in the 10100 block of Ingram Road.

According to a preliminary SAPD report, a 22-year-old man driving a Volkswagen, with the 3-month-old child inside, was traveling west on Ingram Road when he allegedly made an illegal left turn at an apartment complex.

Police said two pickup trucks, a black Chevrolet and a white pickup truck, were speeding behind the 22-year-old man’s vehicle.

When the Volkswagen made an incorrect left turn, the 21-year-old driver of the black Chevrolet rear-ended the Volkswagen and redirected it into the eastbound lanes of Ingram Road, police said.

Officers said the 21-year-old driver exited the Chevrolet, entered the white pickup truck and fled the scene.

The 3-month-old child was transported to a local hospital with serious injuries, SAPD said.

The department said another juvenile was inside the Volkswagen at the time of the crash. It is unclear if they suffered any injuries.

No other injuries were reported.

Authorities said the driver of the Volkswagen, who remained at the scene, was evaluated and found to be intoxicated. The 22-year-old man faces two counts of driving while intoxicated with a child under 15, SAPD said.

Police said the 21-year-old man was located shortly after the crash. He faces a charge of collision involving serious bodily injury.
