Beater Beater by Gary-Grayson lifts No. 19 West Orange passing Depaul in Ot Thriller

Kyley Gary-Grayson was not exactly sure if he was going to shoot the ball when he received an entrance pass from his teammate Jordyn Batts with 3.2 seconds to go extra time.

But West Orange’s senior guard went back to what his coach, Canick Montague Williams, always says: If you see an opening, shoot the ball with confidence.

Gary-Grayson was happy at the end of the day he took the shot over time.

Gary-Grayson knocked down a triple winner of the game as time expired, raising No. 19 West Orange to an exciting 58-55 victory in extra time on Depaul on Thursday on Wayne.

“It’s about trust,” Gary-Grayson said. “I wasn’t sure I shot him, but at the end of the day, my coach gave me confidence. She said that shoots that, and I let him fly. He felt good. I and my team played hard and well the whole game and I’m glad we had to get the victory.

“When I did that, I was so relieved. After a hard game, obtaining dubbing is a reliever. TRUE.”

Gary-Grayson said Thursday’s shot was the second bell of his high school career. It ended with a double with 18 points and 10 rebounds while distributing five assists.

The winner of the game came after Williams called a waiting time and the game tied at age 55. Williams said he was sure that any of his players took the final shot, but he was happy that one of his superior leaders put on when the clock was marking.

Gary-Grayson took a dribble after receiving the ball before loading and taking the shot.

“Kyley, the first shot was open, but it is crazy because it feels more comfortable shooting the dribble. So I guess three seconds were enough for her to shoot, ”said Williams. “I am happy for her because she fought in the last game (a defeat for Glen Ridge), and because she has confidence and took that shot and enters and recovered thus shows her leadership.

“So I’m proud of her.”

Rhyan Watt added 18 points for West Orange, while Batts contributed seven. Anaya Karriem had five points and demolished 15 rebounds for the mountaineers.

West Orange (14-4) led 30-16 in the half time before Depaul (10-5) recovered in the second half, and finally sent the game in extra time.

The first year student Giovanna Burress scored 30 points in the game for Depoul, while her first -year student Breya Le Tennier had 13.
