Spectators training promotes safer Owensboro

Evansville, Ind. (WFIE) -The training in Oday spectators intervention brought together members of the community anxious to learn to intervene safely by witnessing harassment, discrimination or other harmful actions.

“I have been an objective individual in the past and I was in a situation in which nobody did anything and the situation is bad enough as it is, but it gets worse when you realize that no body helps you and I realized that the People did not help because they didn’t know what to do, ”said Peggy Wilson, a founding member of Non -violent Owensboro.

Peggy Wilson, founding member of Non -violent Owensboro, says that training gives people practical skills and strategies to discourage situations and support those who can be attacked.

“You are not there to face the stalker, you will not solve the problems of the world assuming that person. But you’re going to say the world for that person who has someone who really defended them and worried enough to get involved, “Wilson said.

Attendees participated in simulated scenarios, learning effective techniques to evaluate situations and intervene safely.

“People need someone to defend them and I think that by learning this I can share my friends in my community. participant in the meeting.

Organizers expect training to inspire participants to use their new skills to create a more inclusive environment for all.

“It is a relief to know that there are other people who try to do the same, connect with people and, hopefully, be able to make a small difference,” said Faith Hicks, participant in the meeting.

Wilson says that this training is only one of the many ways in which Owensboro Non violent is working to build a stronger and more compassionate community.
