Final of the MacRory Cup: competition New Boys Abbey Vocational Face 16 Time Champions St Pat’s Maghera

Sunday’s MacRory Cup final in Celtic Park (15:00 GM) will be live on the BBC IPlayer and BBC Sport website as ABBEY’s vocational battle of the Donegal Town School in its first season in Ulster Colleges competition against 16 times Champions St Patrick’s College Maghera.

But while Abbey Vocational can have the lack of experience in the MacRory Cup, this group of players are proven winners with more than 10 of the team that helped four teachers win two Ulter Club titles.

In addition, the majority of Abbey’s team, who are trained by Gweedore’s man, Stuart McFadden, achieved the titles of the Maclarnon Cup and All-Ilay B Colleges last year.

Abbey’s captain, Turloough Carr, says that reaching the final in the first time asking is an “incredible achievement”, but admits that they will not have an inferiority complex against the teachers of the past Macrory.

“We have a very strong team and we have a very good experience. We have competed in the Ulter Club championship and we have won two of them, so we are eager to have another crack,” Carr said.

The Maghera captain of St Pat is Cahal McKaigue, cousin of former Derry star, Chrissy McKaigue, who is part of the management team led by Sean Marty Lockhart.

Banagher Man Lockhart captained the Maghera school to the glory of the MacRory Cup and the Hogan Cup 30 years ago.

“You enter school in the first year, you go there to win the MacRory Cup. That’s why you go to St Pat’s,” says midfielder McKaigue, who likes Chrissy, comes from Skinkneil.

“Hunger is definitely there. The group really wants it and the buzz is very, very good at school.”

The BBC coverage will begin at 14:50 GMT with Conor Glass and Ryan Mchugh in the duty of experts, since Mark Sidebottom presents the transmission and Thomas Nibock is in comments.
