How Lowell can lead the way in the educational innovations of AI: Sentinel and Enterprise

Artificial intelligence (AI) is transforming how we work, learn and connect. As president of the Greater Lowell Chamber of Commerce, I see companies that adapt to AI, from the rationalization of operations to the creation of new jobs. I use tools such as Chatgpt and Notebook LM Daily for content creation, strategic planning and data analysis, making my work more efficient. These tools improve, do not replace, human experience, demonstrating the value that AI can contribute to our community.

As a mother and candidate for the school committee in general, I see the potential of AI for Lowell public schools. The resources promoted by AI can equip students and educators with the skills necessary for a rapid evolution workforce. The AI is not the future: it is here, transforming industries and remodeling how we solve the problems. If we integrate the education of AI now, we can maintain the workforce of competitive Lowell and strengthen our economy.

AI offers an opportunity that changes the game to customize learning. Adaptive programs, AI tutoring and assistance technology can help each student, regardless of capacity, to obtain the support they need. The AI can also identify the learning gaps in real time, allowing teachers to intervene early so that no child stays behind. If we adopt AI now, LPS students will gain a competitive advantage in a Labor Market promoted by AI.

With Middlesex Community College and Umass Lowell in our backyard, Lowell students have access to the education and research of Vanguardia. The development of Linc of Umass Lowell (Lowell Innovation Network Corridor) will attract companies promoted by AI, promoting our local economy and creating unique learning opportunities. By strengthening associations between LP, Higher Education and industry leaders, we can provide students with practical experiences, internships and professional careers that distinguish them.

The AI can also support teachers by reducing the workload and improving the results of the students. Educators stretch thin with lessons planning, qualification and administrative tasks. AI can automate repetitive work, giving teachers more time to concentrate on what really matters: teach, tutoring and build connections with students. The schools that embrace the AI will not only attract the best talents, but will also retain the dedicated educators that we need for our students to prosper.

Beyond the academic, AI can play a fundamental role in the mental health of students. As a mother who has faced the challenge of accessing mental health resources for my children, I see the potential of the tools promoted by AI to help counselors to connect with students more efficiently. AI can detect early signs of stress, anxiety and depression, ensuring timely intervention so that no child falls through cracks.

While AI offers exciting possibilities, its implementation must be considered, with a strong approach to privacy, equity and ethical considerations.

Lowell has always been at the forefront of technology and innovation, from the industrial revolution to current emerging industries. As a mother, business leader and candidate for Lowell’s school committee, I am committed to ensuring that our schools not only keep up with change, but also lead the way. AI is here, and we have the opportunity to position Lowell’s public schools as a model for education forward. Let us make sure that our students and educators are equipped to prosper in this new era.

Danielle McFadden is the president and executive director of the Greater Lowell Chamber of Commerce.
