Six GMP police officers could face charges

Six police officers could face criminal charges after death in custody of a 20 -year -old man.

Jack Higham became seriously ill and died after his arrest by the Gran Manchester Police (GMP) in Leigh in February 2023 after the stabbing reports.

After investigation into possible crimes of serious negligence and misconduct in public office, the Independent Police Conduct Office (IAPC) has sent six officers to the service of the Crown Prosecutor’s Office (CPS).

A GMP spokesman said that the force had fully cooperated with the IAPC with respect to the “supposed serious crimes.”

The officers began the CPR and called an ambulance for Higham, who died at the scene of his arrest after becoming “very bad,” said an IAPC spokesman.

When the police guardian dog He launched his investigation In the case, he said he would examine the “level of force used to contain man” and the care that was given when he felt bad.

The six GMP officers were told that they were under criminal investigation in January 2024, IAPC spokesman added.

An investigation into the death of Mr. Higham opened and postponed last month, and the police guard dog confirmed that he was waiting for the result of new post -mortem tests.

The IAPC commitment director, Amanda Rowe, said the Guardian dog sent the cases to the CPS if her investigations “indicate that a criminal offense has been committed.”

She emphasized: “It does not mean that criminal charges will necessarily follow. Now we will expect a decision of CPS on this matter.”

The IAPC also confirmed that five other officers had received notices of gross misconduct for possible violations of police behavior standards.

A GMP spokesman said: “We are in contact with the GMP Federation to ensure that the officers involved are updated and compatible.”

The force will not comment until after the CPS decides whether to bring any position, added the spokesman.
