More than 10 students from the University of Jamia Millia Islamia were arrested Thursday by the Delhi Police after a protest against the disciplinary action of the university against two doctoral academics.

Doctoral students received exhibition causes for allegedly organizing a demonstration that they held last year against university policies.

“We eliminate more than 10 students around 4 am after receiving a request from the University Administration. In addition, we have deployed great police security outside the campus to maintain the law and order,” said a police source.

The protest of Jamia’s students began on Monday, with students condemning what they called as the “repression of administration against student activism.”

Students were specifically gathering the actions taken against the two doctoral academics in relation to the “Day of the Resistance Day” in December 2024, which marked the anniversary of the protests of the amendment law against the city (CAA) 2019.

According to the university, Protestant students destroyed the property of the university, including the central canteen, and broke the door of the security advisor’s office, which forced the administration to take measures.

“They have violated the rules of the university and found objectable smuggling articles. The university administration, which is considering the damage to the property of the university, the disfiguration of the walls and the obstruction of the classes, has taken preventive measures for Ensure that academic activities continue as normal, “it was added.

Delhi Police says that Jamia University requested intervention

According to police sources, the University requested the intervention of the police to eliminate the site protesters to avoid greater disturbances.

A police statement confirmed that the students had been eliminated and that the investigations were ongoing. The University also issued a statement, claiming that the protest was illegal, and accused students of carrying “objectable smuggling articles” and destroying university properties.

Despite an offer from the administration to discuss the complaints of the students through a committee, the protesters refused to interact with university officials, including the supervisor, the boss and the Dean.

In response, the university administration, with the support of the proctial team, evicted the Campus protesters and requested police support to maintain order.

Student leader Sonakshi told PTI that protesters have four key demands: revoke the exhibition causes issued to the two doctoral students, repealing the 2022 office memorandum that restricts the protests on the campus, discarding the Fine of 50,000 per graffiti and posters, and does not guarantee any future disciplinary action against students for participating in protests.

The Disciplinary Committee will meet on February 25 to review the role of the two doctoral students in the organization of the “Resistance Day” on December 15, 2024, an annual event that marks the protests of the amendment law Against Citizensity (CAA) 2019.
