At least 28 people were injured, two serious, in a “suspicious attack” after an Afghan national took a car to a crowd in Munich, police said.

It is said that at least two people are “very seriously injured,” according to the local police.

The children were among the injured, said the mayor of Munich, Dieter Reiter, adding that he was “deeply shocked.”

The car approached police vehicles on the scene before accelerating when he saw the officers on the scene and hitting people, a police spokesman said.

Governor Bávaro Markus Soeder has said: “It was probably an attack.”

Police have said that he believes that the driver, who has been retained, was a 24 -year -old Afghan asylum applicant. He did not raise more threat, they said.

He shot during the arrest, police said, without adding more details.

The incident took place in a square near the center of Munich, near the city’s central train station around 10.30 am (9.30 AM GMT), police said.

Images of the scene that show a very damaged cream mini were published along with debris that include shoes.

Sandra Demmelhuber, a journalist of the local station, BR24, published a photo in X that showed a damaged car surrounded by police and emergency equipment.

She said: “There is a person lying on the street and the police took a young man. People were sitting on the ground, crying and trembling. The details are not yet clear.”

There are reports in the German shooting media heard on the scene.

Sky’s correspondent in Europe, Siobhan Robbins, said the reports have cited face -to -face witnesses, which say the police may have fired the car window, possibly to get access.

The police have not confirmed if they shot and are telling the public to stay away from the area.

It is not suspected that the incident is connected to the next Munich Security Conference that begins on Friday at about 1.5 km (1 mile) away, Soede said.

American vice president JD Vance and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy will arrive later on Thursday.

Security has been focused on Germany before a federal election next week and after a series of violent attacks.
