“I just hope we would get justice,” Melody said. “I felt that it was necessary to be here for my daughter, I think I deserved that, what happened to her was avoidable.”

Evans, father of 4 young children, admitted that he was scared and left. He declared guilty of criminal vehicular operation, causing great body damage and abandoning the scene.

In court on Thursday morning, Evans apologized.

Hennepin County Judge, Amber Brennan, said he followed the state guidelines, sentencing Evans six months in the Hennepin County prison. He will be eligible for work release and will also spend three years on probation.

“We end up receiving the maximum penalty, which I do not think is enough, unfortunately our state is quite indulgent in things like this,” said Melody.

The family said they are very grateful for the support of the community that has been there on this emotional trip.

“We are just trying to take it one day at the same time,” Melody added.
