Talking with Indiewire In 2012, Wheatley discussed the traumatic nature of the film and the discussions about whether or not he considers the list of killing horror.

“I think it’s a horror movie,” he concluded. ‘As things advanced, I wasn’t sure if I had made the mistake of understanding the difference between horror and horrible.

‘And I think it’s definitely a horrible movie, but it was definitely a movie that was trying to make it scary.

‘I think that my understanding of what a terrifying film is broader than direct gender definitions of what could be a horror movie. I stretch it to include things like “Come and See” by Elem Klimov or some of Ken Loach’s films. “

He added: “So I think it’s psychological horror and such things are not necessarily within the kingdoms of the supernatural, but they will enter the public’s head and play with such feelings.”
