In a work session of the city commission on Wednesday, February 12, the city commission discussed the update of Title 6 of the Municipal Code that explains the animal ordinances, which included abolishing the Pit Bull Registrante requirement.

The Pit Bull registration requirements have been controversial for a long time for Butler County and the surrounding areas. The city of Augusta approved an ordinance to eliminate the prohibition of the Pit Bulls in August 2023. The prohibition of the Pit Bulls registration requirements, Staffordshire Terriers or other similar mixes of mixing was popular for cities in the 1980s , when the information had been extended through the media. of dangerous dog fights. To combat the possibility that these inhuman fights occur in cities, prohibition and the registrants of those dogs came to light.

Dogs were finally considered dangerous by the general population and the media due to the negative association, although it has never been scientifically demonstrated that dogs are aggressive or dangerous from birth, but due to the breeding and training of said dog, Like any other race.

While several citizens have come to talk about this issue in recent years with the intention of persuading the commission to change the ordinance, the city commission is ready to take measures. The decision to eliminate the Pit Bull registration requirements will be taken in the coming months and is already in process.

“I don’t think the public is harmed by this,” said the city manager, David Dillner, in an interview with Times-Gazette. “I think what it really does is what it should do, what is to treat each circumstance case by case and not demonize the breed of dogs.”

The city commission began the discussion on Wednesday night, but Dillner says that the change will not solidify at the meeting of the city commission of March 3 because more work is needed on the ordinance itself. The change will include eliminating all Pit Bull, Staffordshire Terriers or other similar mixing requirements. This includes background verifications on owners and household members, dog licenses, annual fine of $ 50, microchip requirement, limit for two dogs and required sterilization.

All other requirements for what are considered bull races that are not pidden will remain in place and will apply to the Pit Bull races as normal. The Municipal Code will deal with an instance of a bite or an attack of these dogs like any other instance.

“Another thing that I think is important to keep in mind that one of the reasons why this change is happening is because citizens within the community requested change,” Dillner said. “It is important that the public knows that we listen to their requests and take into account their ideas to change the code and municipal regulations. When appropriate, we will advance. “
