5 cowboys free agents with potential to maximize compensatory returns

Dallas Cowboys are rarely active in free agency. Whether you sign your own or buy the market for others, the cowboys generally adopt a frugal approach for the most expensive time of the NFL season.

Over the years it has become a common place for Dallas to lose more free agents than those who sign during the first parts of free agency. Such approach has caused the cowboys to miss clear and obvious roads towards improvement. When losing more quality agents than they have won, cowboys can take advantage of the special security network designed to compensate for the highest NFL -free agents. The better the player, in general, the greater the compensatory choice, provided that they are not canceled by an incoming firm that is equal to its value.

Over the years, the cowboys have been teachers in maximizing their compensatory selections. They have altered their free agent strategy taking into account compensatory selections in an effort to maximize their yields in the draft. The NFL has limited total compensation in four selections and the cowboys seem intention to obtain that maximum each possible year. It does not mean that they cannot sign any quality free agent, it only means that they need to take a net loss of four players during the free agent period prior to the draft of the low season.

In 2025, cowboys have a package of six players who should offer compensatory returns if they are allowed to leave. Once again, most of the Dallas could receive in a single year are four compensatory selections.

The veteran defensive end seems to be at the end of the road in Dallas. After the injuries kept him in just 167 defensive snapshots in 2024, Lawrence will probably move from the cowboys this low season. According to the quality of his game and his man who is in the locker room, Lawrence will surely be a desired player in the market.

Given its age and injury situation, it is unlikely to obtain the type of agreement that would return a high compensatory selection, but certainly a modest return must be expected.

Lewis comes from a career season as a nickel corner of the cowboys and hits free agency in a maximum. The veteran CB has always been a tenacious player, strong against the race and aggressive against the pass. His game will be a desired feature in free agency, which makes his departure a sad possibility for Dallas.

After years of injuries, sets and obstacles, Dowdle finally had the opportunity to shine as an initial corridor. Despite the game of musical chairs along the offensive line of the cowboys, Dowdle stood out as the best cowboys corridor. It seemed to improve as the season progressed and entered free agency as one of the best RB in the market.

Its history of ordered injuries should be considered, but Dowdle is looking to charge great this season as initial RB. Without any decent option in the pipe, cowboys can try to keep Dowdle and combine it with a more explosive rookie. Or they can turn the page completely, rebuild the RB room from scratch and accept the draft selection compensation.
