‘The number of seagulls has increased significantly recently, although this is a growing problem for months.

‘It has become really frustrating that we can no longer sit in our garden due to bird disaster, the noise of the seagull or hang our washing.

“We constantly have to clean our cars and house due to the droppings and another disaster they are doing.”

He added: ‘The seagulls are a protected species and obviously do not want them to select them because they are only feeding with the waste.

“What we want is the discharge of suspended household waste until they are transferred to Farington Waste Tip (Leyland), which is much better equipped to deal with the amount of household garbage.”

Julie Birtwell, 63, said: ‘I can’t sit in my garden or have a barbecue due to seagulls flying over.

‘My washing is also constantly covered with mud.

‘Last week, my Cocker Spaniel was sick and I think he had eaten something that a seagull had fallen in the garden.

‘It has definitely worsened and the tip is slowing down closer to our homes.

‘They have more seagulls from Covid because once they find a food source, they will remain.

‘There are also more trucks that are reaching the tip, which is also getting worse.

‘The seagull poop is a problem and I have to wash it in my car all the time because it can be quite corrosive and damage the paint.

‘But you just have to move on. There is also an argument that if you buy a house near a landfill, you must wait for it. ‘

Rhian McGhee, a resident who lives near the tip, said: ‘The smell of the tip is disgusting.

‘People who live near him cannot open their windows or hang out, because there are hundreds of gangs flying.

‘Our gardens, entrances and cars are covered with bird poop. It smells like a great rotten garbage bin and people can’t even sit outside when it’s hot.

‘People have complained but nothing is being done.

‘We are a small city that is being bombarded with garbage, seagulls, flies and rats everywhere.

“The Council is owned by Suez, but surely the council can do something.”

Rob Ross, 40, said: ‘The waste of the seagull is damaging the stock. It is also a health risk and is very antihigienic for personnel who handle actions.

‘It is a constant problem. We do everything possible to eliminate it, but this is not always possible and seems like a disaster.

‘We sell a lot of decorative stocks and customers want it to look completely new, not covered with seagull waste.

“Some actions have not been able to sell and it has cost a lot of money to the business.”

Richard Phillips, Suez Recycling and Recovery UK Ltd’s landfill operations manager, told the BBC: “It is simply unfair and false to affirm that the site is creating dangerous conditions.”

‘We are a responsible operator and we strive to be a good neighbor.

“We maintain our operations under a constant review, and we will continue to receive expert advice, such as Natural England, to minimize any potential impact on our neighbors.”

The Environment Agency said it was “taking measures to ensure that the operator, Suez, addresses problems in Whinney Hill’s landfill and recognize the anguish that smell and seagulls are causing members of the community.”
