Pain persists for the victim’s mother in fatal 2022 Palknife clash

Losing a child is the worst nightmare of all parents, and Celine Mantla has suffered that pain three times in her life.

His last son, Germaine Mantla, 30, was hit by a Yellowknife car in 2022 and then died in the hospital.

Hannah Laferty is currently in Yellowknife trial, accused of dangerous driving, causing death in relation to that collision near Bison Hill Apartments in April 2022.

Celine Mantla says that it has been a very difficult time for her since that day, when RCMP knocked on her door to tell her that Germaine had been hit by a vehicle.

“I’ve lost my son three years ago. I’ve lost my baby, my last son, Germaine,” Celine told CBC News.

He remembered how Germaine had called her before, the night of the incident, while she was at work.

“He said: ‘Mom … are you working?’ I said: ‘Yes, “Celine said.

That was the last time she talked to him. Celine says she was awake until 4 in the morning, but Germaine did not get home. The RCMP reached its door the next morning.

“I said: ‘I don’t want to listen to it, I don’t want to hear it.’ I had already lost two children.

“I had already lost two children. My last baby, my only last baby I had lost.”

She said Germaine was stunned in Edmonton and was in a coma. Later he died from his head wounds, he said.

Celine is originally from Deline, NWT, and has lived in Yellowknife for 28 years. Germaine was buried in Deline, he said.

Celine says Germaine left two daughters. Celine says that one of them, Skyler, will sometimes see a different person around him and says: “Oh, that is my dad.”

Celine remembers the good times he had with Germaine and his two daughters too.

After Germaine died, Celine says she underwent a trauma treatment for six months. Now, he says that taking care of his four grandchildren gives him strength.

“I’m glad to keep my grandchildren, and that is really giving me happiness,” he said.
