Police are also working to locate a 40 -year -old man in relation to the incident.

Cheshire Constabulary said the victim was walking through Bardsley Avenue, Warrington, around 6.40 pm on Monday, February 24.

He was taken to the Aintree hospital, where he remains in a critical but stable condition.

Police chief Mark Roberts said: “This was an innocent man who simply walked down the street when he was attacked horribly by an alleged fellow XL not registered.

“These dogs are like weapons; their physical attributes can do it like having a firearm loaded with a questionable safety capture.

“The size and ferocity of these animals mean that our firearms officers had to download 19 shots, all of which achieved their objectives, to bring the incident to a conclusion and guarantee the security of the public.

“While the victim now receives the treatment he requires, there is no doubt that this incident will affect him for the rest of his life.

“The danger to the public that these dogs represent is well known, so Cheshire Constabulary has been extremely proactive to enforce the new regulations.

“Until now we have already eliminated more than 100 XL thugs from the streets of Cheshire, and we are committed to doing everything possible to ensure that those who do not comply with the new regulations are responsible.”
