The Grand Jury accuses a dozen people for the human smuggling operation

Las Cruces, NM – A Federal Grand Jury at Las Cruces accused about a dozen people for charges for allegedly smuggling people on the southern border.

A grand jury returned the accusation on Wednesday against the suspects. Prosecutors accused them of their alleged roles in an operation that smuggled to people from the South and Central America, across the border to the United States.

The authorities arrested eight of the suspects on Thursday and Friday.

The federal authorities claim that the suspects brought people through the border, transported them within the United States and hid them in ‘accommodation houses’ along the way. The suspects are accused of accelerating the police and instructing immigrants with them on how to avoid border patrol. Prosecutors claim that they left an immigrant after they died from exposure to heat.

  • Jose Palomino, 27, from El Paso

  • Edna Valdez-China, 48, from El Paso
  • Leslie Nicole Calvillo, also known as Leslie Jaramillo, 24, of El Paso
  • Melissa Vargas, 22, from El Paso
