Romania prosecutors question extreme right after a vote canceled

Romanian prosecutors interrogated the extreme right of Wednesday, Calin Georgescu, who led the first round of last year’s presidential elections, but then saw the results annulled in a surprising movement that has shaken the country.

The Constitutional Court of the country in December annulled the elections after the accusations of Russian interference and claims for promoting “massive” social networks of Georgescu, who shot prominence practically during the night.

Georgescu has denied any irregularity and has called for annulment a “formalized blow.”

The television images showed Georgescan entering the office of the attorney general flanked by the police.

A judicial source told AFP that he would be interrogated, but declined to make more comments.

Earlier on Wednesday, the authorities registered dozens of premises throughout the country, according to a statement from the prosecutor’s office.

The prosecutors said that the raids were part of an investigation into alleged crimes, including “establishing an organization with a fascist, racist or xenophobic character” and “false statements regarding the sources of financing of the electoral campaign,” they said.

The statement did not mention Georgescu by its name.

“I, on behalf of my voters, but also of those who, although they have other political options, I want a democratic and free Romania: (i) I am fighting against this security system that loves us in slavery,” Georgescu published on Facebook .

The United Kingdom, as well as the Baltic and Nordic nations are pressing for immediate action, while France, Germany and Italy oppose.

His team said that Georgescu was arrested by the police in traffic and told him to come to interrogate.

Outside the prosecutor’s office, Georgescu supporters met, some with flags and singing “traitors” and “freedom.”

The decision of the EU member and NATO to cancel the vote, weird in the European Union, immersed the country of Eastern Europe in a crisis, with tens of thousands who protested it.

On May 4, a new first round of presidential elections will take place, with a second on May 18 if no first -round candidate wins more than 50% of the votes.
