Man killed in the elephant attack

A man has been killed in an elephant attack within the Chunati Wildlife Sanctuary at Banshkhali Upazila de Chattogram.

The deceased is Abu Siddique, 45, of the Upazila Puichhari Union.

“Siddique entered the sanctuary on Thursday morning to collect solar fat (a type of perennial grass used for roofs in rural areas), but did not return home. Today, relatives and locals entered the sanctuary to look for it, and found their body in a field around 10:00 am,” said Anisuzzaman Sheikh, Forestry of Jaldi Wildi Wildlife Range.

No one can enter any reserve forest without obtaining permission according to the existing forest law.

“We provide financial compensation to victims of elephant attacks. However, there is no disposition for compensation if an elephant attack occurs within a sanctuary or a forest reserve area. Therefore, Siddique’s family will not receive any compensation,” he added.

The members of the deceased family could not be contacted to obtain comments.
