AG Campbell announces regulations against the ‘junk rates’ that fit the products: Boston News, Weather, Sports

Boston (WHDH) – Massachusetts attorney general, Andrea Campbell, announced on Monday the next consumer protection regulations that prohibits “junk rates”: hidden costs, surprise or unnecessary that boost the price of a product beyond what was announced.

Campbell’s office said rates violate the Massachusetts consumer protection law, since companies often cannot reveal them or delay them to reveal them until the end of a transaction.

“We have all been there: we booked a hotel room, bought tickets for concerts or paid a service that was announced at a price and then charged for an exponentially higher, all due to hidden garbage rates,” Campbell said in a statement.

The innovative regulations, as of September 2, will require companies to clearly indicate the total price of a product, along with mandatory charges or rates, before a consumer has to give their personal billing information.

When presenting a proof offer, companies will have to reveal any positions that a consumer can incur for accepting it, as well as specific instructions for consumers to cancel the offer before the charges begin.

Campbell regulations will ensure that consumers can cancel subscriptions “as easily as they can register with them,” according to their office.

“These regulations seek to keep more money in residents’ pockets fighting these unnecessary rates and guaranteeing that consumers understand exactly how much and what they are paying,” Campbell said.
