‘I am terrified’: fears of Ukrainian immigrants by their country of origin amid the American help

Rochester, NY – The United States has officially arrested help to Ukraine, causing concern among local Ukrainian immigrants.

News10NBC spoke with Oleksandra Zakharchyshyn, a Ukrainian immigrant, about her fears regarding the impact on her homeland.

“I was disappointed and disconsolate because knowing and realizing the importance of American help to Ukraine, I am terrified of what will happen later,” said Zakharchyshyn.

Zakharchyshyn, 19, and his family emigrated to the United States about five years ago.

Recently he received his American citizenship, but his thoughts remain with the people of Ukraine.

“I still have a family in Ukraine. And I really want to return there and just visit them. But while the war still continues, I understand that it is not safe for me to return there, ”he explained.

When asked what changes expect to see, Zakharchyshyn emphasized the importance of including Ukraine in peace conversations.

“When there is a conversation of peace or any talk about peace in Ukraine and stop the war, including Ukraine in those conversations, because, I remember before, there were some, peace conversations between us and Russia without including Ukraine and that was really heartbreaking,” he said.

The Pause in American aid follows a recent meeting between President Trump and the president of Ukraine, Zelensky, at the White House.
