Former American prosecutor Joshua Levy returns to Boston Law Firm Ropes & Gray

Levy had left ropes to serve as the first assistant of the United States prosecutor in January 2022. He had requested superior work, but Rollins Rollins was chosen. However, Levy ended up leading the office and its approximately 125 prosecutors in May 2023 as an acting American prosecutor after Rollins resigned in the middle of two ethics probes. President Joe Biden later nominated Levy for the permanent position in October of that year, but that nomination remained in the Senate; The then General Agredator Merrick Garland finally appointed Levy for the role of the United States prosecutor last November, with two remaining months of the Biden Administration.

Levy had previously worked as a federal prosecutor at the Boston office from 1997 to 2004, and then worked on strings for 17 years, and finally co -presided the practice of company litigation. It will return as a partner in that same practice.

“It was several very intense years for me,” Levy said about his most recent mandate in the office of the United States prosecutor. “From what the office passed with the resignation of the former US prosecutor, I developed some skills at the time I was not sure to have, to help the office to recover very quickly. … I worked seven days a week for three years and I would have continued to do it for a longer time. ”

Among the cases that are more proud to prosecute during its three years as the leader of the office or second in command: one that involves Magellan Diagnostics, a massachusetts company that incorrectly commercialized the effectiveness of its lead test devices for children; Consulting of the Settlements of $ 650 million of the consulting giant McKinsey & Co. for their work advising the Opioid manufacturer Purdue Pharma to the sales of “turbocarge” of Oxycontin; and the successful commercial search for a Russian millionaire who pirate the US computers to obtain profit information and accumulate tens of millions in illegal profits after trade with that secret information. (The businessman, Vladislav Klyushin, was then changed to Russia in the exchange of prisoners who brought home the journalist of Wall Street Evan Gershkovich).

While Levy was in the office, he implemented new trial preparation procedures for prosecutors. Levy said he contributed to the office of the United States prosecutor not to lose a criminal trial in 2024 (although two of the 34 trials ended in hanging jurors).

“I’m not the one who does the job,” said Levy. “The phenomenal people … are doing the job in my office. It is a high quality office. Sometimes I say that I would like the public to see what is happening in the office of a prosecutor like ours, the amount of time to do well and the lack of discussion about politics at any stage. “

Speaking of politics, what about the concerns that President Trump would display the prosecutors of the Department of Justice for political purposes?

Levy said he has full confidence in his successor, Foley, who had previously been the attached head of the Narcotics Unit and Money Laundering of the office.

“She is a real professional,” Levy said. “I have full confidence in his ability … to follow the facts of the law without taking into account external factors.”

As he returns to private practice, Levy said he hopes to help people and companies navigate the challenges they face when they face the application of the adverse government. Levy said he did not think about going to another place other than his former law firm, which is also Boston’s greatest.

The president of the strings, Julie Jones, said in a statement that she is delighted that Levy returned to her team, “especially because the application panorama becomes more complex for our customers.” Jones described Levy as a “power on both sides of the execution table, recently leading some of the most notable prosecutions and investigations of the government.”

And Jeff Katz, co-manager of the firm’s office in Boston, praised Levy’s experience and legal knowledge. “Through Josh’s previous mandate in the firm, we have seen firsthand how shocking are his presence, ideas and experience, for our clients, our lawyers and the entire string community,” Katz said in an email.

Levy has not ruled out taking another government concert one day. In fact, he expects it, if the moment and the situation are correct, either in Washington or Massachusetts.

“I did a lot of work before and I hope to do that again,” said Levy. “I am still trying to find a way of being active in the public service. I’m just not sure what that is now. “
