Law Enforcement Agents Raid Another Top Eric Adams Adviser

NEW YORK – Law enforcement officers raided the home of a former New York Police Department official Thursday, the latest case in which federal prosecutors investigate a friend and ally of New York City Mayor Eric Adams.

Early in his tenure, Adams named Jeffrey Maddrey as chief of department of the NYPD, the highest uniformed position that entails overseeing the agency’s daily activities. Last month, Maddrey abruptly resigned from her position after explosive sexual harassment allegations.

On Thursday, NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch said officials are now investigating the former cop and that he had been officially suspended.

“At my direction, the New York City Police Department’s Internal Affairs Bureau is working with law enforcement authorities to investigate the allegations against former Department Chief Jeffrey Maddrey,” Tisch said in a statement. “Maddrey was suspended from the Department this morning as law enforcement officers executed search warrants at several locations, including his residence.”

Tisch directed further questions to the U.S. Attorney’s office for the Southern District of New York. A spokesman, Nicholas Biase, declined to comment on the raids.

Maddrey’s attorney did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Maddrey denied sexually assaulting a woman who worked for him and said the relationship was consensual.

The Adams administration has been dogged by police raids for more than a year. And the mayor himself will be tried on federal bribery charges in April.

Officers have searched the homes of many of the mayor’s closest confidants and have shown particular interest in his candidates to lead the police department. A former commissioner, the former deputy mayor for public safety, Adams’ top public safety adviser and now Maddrey are gone after authorities investigated their conduct.

That hollowing out of the NYPD’s leadership — all of them old friends of the mayor who were hand-picked for the job — comes just as Adams must prepare for re-election after promising to effectively run the nation’s largest police department.
