The S-Coreano leader is accused

(Menafn) South Korean prosecutors have formally accused President Yoon Suk Yeol for charges of leading an insurrection after his brief imposition of the martial law last month. Yoon, who was accused on December 14, faces accusations of abusing his power and undermining Democratic institutions.

Yoon declared the martial law on December 3, citing an alleged plot of the opposition to organize a “rebellion” and accusing them of aligning with North Korea. The controversial measure was quickly annulled, which led to its accusation by the National Assembly. His arrest on January 15 caused violent protests of his supporters, who assaulted the West District Court.

The Prosecutor’s Office, after reviewing the evidence of several investigations, decided to accuse Yoon, citing sufficient evidence and concerns that it could destroy evidence if they are not formally charged. Prosecutors argue that their martial law decree was part of a broader plan to confiscate the control of state functions.

The insurrection is one of the few positions of which a South Korean president has no immunity, and if he is convicted, Yoon could face life imprisonment or even the death penalty. Yoon’s legal team has dismissed charges as politically motivated, claiming that martial law was a necessary step to counteract the obstacles led by the opposition. He has promised to continue fighting with his followers to defend the nation.

The Constitutional Court is currently deliberating if you must permanently eliminate Yoon from office, with a required decision within 180 days. From now on, Yoon’s presidential powers are suspended, and Prime Minister Han Duck-Soo serves as an interim president. Yoon is the first president of South Korea to face criminal charges while he is in office.
