Former Putnam County Commissioner, the Sheriff sentenced

Putnam County, W.VA. (WSAZ) – Former Commissioner and Sheriff of the Putnam Steve Deweese County has been sentenced, two months after declaring himself guilty after an investigation into the undue appropriation of the funds.

Deweese was sentenced to a one -year probation and to pay the restitution. You have a year to pay restitution.

Deweese appeared in an Alford statement in December, in which he maintained his innocence, but admitted that the evidence would probably result in a verdict of guilt in the trial.

The investigation focused on the money raised by the Putnam County Sheriff’s office through the sale of ads in a calendar between 2017 and 2019.

According to prosecutors, the Sheriff Deputy Association of the Putnam County Sheriff did not receive any control or deposit related to advertisement sales in the calendar. Prosecutors say that the association would receive $ 4,000.

The researchers say Deweese charged four checks for $ 1,000 each for personal use.

Deweese completed two periods as Sheriff of the Putnam County before winning the Putnam County Commission in 2022. He resigned in November 2024 due to the investigation.
