Panola County Deputy’s Widow Testifies in Closing Arguments in Trial of Man Accused of Murder

LONGVIEW, Texas (KLTV) – The state has rested the case of Gregory Newson, who is accused of murdering Panola County Deputy Chris Dickerson in December 2019.

The morning in court began with a phone call Newson placed in jail to a woman. Newson said Dickerson was “preparing to kill me” and also stated, “I don’t feel bad about anything.”

“In my heart I did the right thing,” Newson said, saying he feared for his life.

Dickerson’s widow was the state’s last witness. Krista Dickerson-Shows said her routine was normal that last night.

She told Chris to come home to her. He smiled and said “always.”

The prosecution asked what his reaction was when the police came to his door early in the morning.

“I knew it,” Dickerson-Shows said.

The defense offered no witnesses and closed. Keynote addresses will begin Monday at 8:30 am.
