Readers Respond: Rachel Philips Cares About Crime Victims

I am writing in support of Raquel Philips for Multnomah County Circuit Judge. I met her in 2021 when she represented my husband in a property crimes case. I liked how knowledgeable she was and how hard she worked to defend him. In September 2022, my husband was murdered. Phillips worked with me during this traumatic time, helping me explain things that prosecutors couldn’t or wouldn’t tell me, letting me know what to expect, and asserting my rights as the victim’s family.

Throughout the entire process, she was empathetic and understanding, but also honest. The prosecutors on the case were young and professional, and it often seemed as if they were telling us what they thought we wanted to hear to try to make us feel better. Philips felt comfortable sitting with me and my pain. She always told me the truth, including that the criminal justice system is often not fair and that when the case was resolved it would bring some relief and closure, but it would never make me feel better.
