Man struck and killed by vehicle on I-10 in west Phoenix

PHOENIX (AZ Family) — A man died after being struck by a vehicle overnight on Interstate 10 in west Phoenix early Friday.

The Arizona Department of Public Safety said that around 3:20 a.m. officers received calls of a person walking on westbound I-10 near 27th Avenue, crossing the median.

Shortly after, the unidentified man was walking in the eastbound HOV lane when he was struck by a Hyundai SUV. The driver of that vehicle remained at the scene. Impairment is not believed to be a factor in the accident.

DPS said the man was hospitalized with life-threatening injuries. DPS Sergeant Eric Andrews at the scene later confirmed that he died at the hospital.

Sergeant. Andrews said it is unknown why the man was walking on the highway.

I-10 was closed eastbound at “The Stack,” the interchange with I-17. All eastbound traffic was detoured to exit onto northbound I-17.

Troopers began reopening the freeway around 5:45 a.m.
