Labor MP Mike Amesbury says he was involved in Cheshire ‘incident’ where he ‘felt threatened’ | UK News

A Labor MP has said he was involved in an incident where he “felt threatened” and is co-operating with police.

Mike Amesbury, MP for Runcorn and Helsby, said he felt “threatened on the street after an evening out with friends” on Friday night in Cheshire.

“This morning I contacted Cheshire Police to report what happened during this incident,” he added.

“I will not be making any further public comments but will of course co-operate with any investigation if required to do so by Cheshire Police.

“I remain fully committed to working hard for the people of Runcorn and Helsby, and I am determined to remain an open and accessible MP for our community.”

Video of the incident appears to show Mr Amesbury standing over a man lying on the ground in Frodsham.

The MP tells the man “you will never threaten me again” while pointing at him, before saying: “Yes, I am (the MP), yes I am, and you will never threaten the MP again, will you?”

Cheshire Police said officers were called at 2.48am to reports of an assault in Frodsham.

“A caller reported he had been assaulted by a man on Main Street. Investigations are ongoing.”

The Labor Party added that it is aware of the incident and said Amesbury “will co-operate with any investigation” by police.
