Macon County Little Texas Community Receives Safe Room Grant

LITTLE TEXAS, Alabama (WSFA) – Little Texas is about to get a little safer.

The community’s volunteer fire department received a grant worth more than $100,000 from FEMA to build a natural disaster safe room.

According to the approval letter, the room will be 24 feet long, 10 feet wide and 8 feet high.

It is a security measure that hits close to home, since in 2019 the nearby community of Beauregard was hit by an EF-4 tornado that left several people dead.

“If those people in Beauregard had received something like what we have, a lot of lives would have been saved,” said fire department business manager Dr. Willie Kirk, Jr. “The safe house would hold 48 people with 2 disabilities “. there, as well as a bathroom.”

The safe room will be secured with a combination lock, allowing all firefighters to open the room at any time, rather than having to search for a key during an emergency.

Work will begin once Macon County officials approve the project and a bid is accepted.
