California high school athlete and father die after small plane crashes into warehouse

A high school multi-sport athlete and her father died after a small “home-built” plane crashed into a California warehouse.

Kelly Reid, 16, and her father Pascal Reid were aboard the Van’s RV-10 plane that crashed into the roof of the Michael Nicholas Design Factory in Fullerton on Thursday.

The horrific incident not only killed Kelly and Pascal, but injured 19 employees inside the warehouse.

Kelly was a high school junior who played flag football, soccer and lacrosse. His father was an experimental aircraft builder and a U.S. Army aviation veteran, according to his LinkedIn profile.

The young athlete’s teachers, coaches and classmates at Huntington Beach High School have come together to mourn her and her father’s death.

“Rest in peace, sweet Kelly,” the school’s football team wrote in a tribute on Instagram. ‘Yesterday our football family suffered an unimaginable loss. Kelly Reid and her father Pascal were tragically lost in a plane crash.

‘Kelly was an amazing girl…genuine and kind with so much passion for life. Kelly was a beloved member of the varsity team and wore the number 6. The number 6 symbolizes love, creating harmony, and caring for others.

She was described as a loving and friendly person. Pascal was said to have attended every football match and was “very proud” of his daughter.

The women’s flag football team also released a statement about Kelly, calling her a “loving teammate, friend and truly extraordinary person.”

‘We will miss her deeply, but we will never forget her. Rest in peace Kelly, you will always be in our hearts,” the publication reads.

Kelly’s lacrosse coach also shared a heartfelt post about her and the time she put in.

The coach wrote on the team’s Instagram page: “In the short time she was in the lacrosse program, she made an immediate impact on and off the field. As a healthy competitor, she enjoyed playing the game and making it her own.

‘She was also immediately drawn to helping her teammates learn with her. She truly enjoyed helping everyone be the best they could be.

“As a coach, I think we all want to build a culture around players like Kelly. She brought the perfect combination of fun and focus and was a great teammate.”

Kelly’s football coach, Raúl Ruiz, told the daily driver who never came home after practice without punching his coaches and teammates.

He told the outlet: ‘You always wanted someone like that on your team. She played an important role in our team’s plan, made a great contribution on the field. But his personality was contagious and that’s what hurts.

On Friday, Kelly’s loved ones tearfully gathered at the First Christian Church in Huntington Beach to honor her and her father’s life.

Thursday’s horrific accident occurred around 2:15 pm when the single-engine plane crashed just minutes after taking off from Fullerton Municipal Airport.

The plane reached about 900 feet in the air before attempting to turn around and make an emergency landing, according to the Daily Pilot.

National Transportation Safety Board spokesman Eliott Simpson said at a news conference: “The plane appeared to turn 180 degrees to the left…and ultimately crashed about 1,000 feet short of the runway.”

The warehouse went up in flames after the collision. More than 100 people had to be evacuated from the interior.

The Federal Aviation Administration has launched an investigation into the crash and to better understand what caused the plane to go down.
