South Korean leader is accused

Date

(MENAFN) South Korean prosecutors have formally charged President Yoon Suk Yeol with leading an insurrection following his brief imposition of martial law last month. Yoon, who was charged on December 14, faces accusations of abuse of power and undermining. Democratic institutions.

Yoon declared martial law on December 3, citing an alleged plot by the opposition to organize a “rebellion” and accusing them of aligning themselves with North Korea. The controversial measure was quickly revoked, leading to his dismissal by the National Assembly. His arrest on January 15 sparked violent protests by his supporters, who stormed the Seoul Western District Court.

The prosecution, after reviewing evidence from several investigations, decided to charge Yoon, citing insufficient evidence and concerns that he could destroy evidence if he was not formally charged. Prosecutors argue that his martial law decree was part of a broader plan to seize control of state functions.

Insurrection is one of the few charges against which a South Korean president has no immunity, and if convicted, Yoon could face life in prison or even the death penalty. Yoon’s legal team dismissed the charges as politically motivated, saying martial law was a necessary step to counter opposition-led obstacles. He has promised to continue fighting alongside his followers to defend the nation.

The Constitutional Court is currently deliberating on Yoon’s permanent removal from office, and must make a decision within 180 days. As of now, Yoon’s presidential powers are suspended and Prime Minister Han Duck-soo serves as acting president. Yoon is the first sitting South Korean president to face criminal charges while in office.
