Speed limit of 20 MPH Galeses: Fall in serious casualties in the first year

The Welsh government changed the predetermined speed limit on urban roads mostly on September 17, 2023, and with some exemptions most 30 mph roads changed to 20.

The ministers launched a policy review after a public reaction, and the councils are currently looking again if more roads can return to 30 mph.

In the third quarter of 2024, from July to September, there were 410 victims of the road collision road on roads of 20 and 30 mph, three were deaths, 90 were serious and 317 were low low.

This was 35% lower than in the same quarter in 2023, said the Galeses government.

During the 12 -month period from the fourth quarter of 2023 to the third of 2024, the number of victims was 28% lower than the same period of the previous year.

Skates said: “The image is still encouraging with the amount of collisions on our roads at its lowest level for this quarter. We know that there is a path to follow and we have always said that it will take several years to see the total impact of the policy, But seeing the figures of this quarter at its lowest level is positive. “

Lee Waters, now a labor backbench who was Minister of Transportation under Mark Drakeford, said: “Now we can say that in its first year the reduction of the speed limit represents the most successful road safety intervention in modern times.

“As we said in advance, a little more slowly but much better.”

The conservative secretary of the Transport Shadow Cabinet Peter Fox added: “While we welcome to any decrease in the casualties of the road, these figures do not tell the whole story. Our concern remains the way in which the limit has been implemented 20 mph speed.

“The predetermined approach to the Welsh labor government has created confusion and frustration for drivers and their current review must address these implementation problems and guarantee a more sensible and effective approach.”
